About Lydia Matthews
I am a sculptor based in Oxford. Before I started sculpting I taught Ancient History at Oxford University and I was inspired to start sculpting by the Greek and Roman works that I taught. My first pieces were directly inspired ancient sculptures: the boar from the Sikyonian Treasury at Delphi, the river Ilissos and a horse from the Parthenon, and a portrait of a Roman man.

I still enjoy working with Classical motifs, but I have also developed a strong interest in portraiture. I work from life and from photographs, generally modelling the figure in wax and clay before casting it.

Commissions

Much of the work that I do is for commissions and I enjoy the process of working together with someone to come up with an idea for a sculpture. These can be anything from larger than life-size portrait busts to much smaller figures that you could hold in one hand.

When creating a portrait I generally find it helpful to have a few short sittings with the subject, but I can also work from photographs. I first create an image in wax or clay; what I choose depends on whether the final sculpture will be cast or not.
